Ole Wæver
Senior Visiting Fellow, Research Center for Advanced Science and Technology (RCAST), The University of Tokyo
Professor at the Department of Political Science, University of Copenhagen.
He completed his Master’s and PhD at the University of Copenhagen.
An international relations scholar of the Copenhagen School in security studies, he approaches the conceptual history of international relations and security issues
—particularly those concerning Europe—from a post-structuralist realist perspective. He is credited with introducing the concept of “securitisation” for the first time.
In 2024, he was awarded the Hartmann Prize in Denmark, which recognizes individuals or organizations that have made highly valuable contributions to society.
He is scheduled to stay in Japan from October 2025 to August 2026 as a Visiting Professor at Tokyo College.
Research interests include theories of international politics, security theory, conceptual history of international politics, conflict theory as well as climate politics, conflict resolution and securitisation.
